‘Mampong MCE Must Go’

Thomas Appiah-Kubi

Constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region have called on President Akufo-Addo to sack the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Thomas Appiah-Kubi.

They have accused the MCE of sidelining them in the activities of the Assembly to promote his personal interests to the detriment of the party in the constituency.

In a 15-point petition to the President and signed by constituency executives, council of elders and patrons of the NPP at Mampong, the petitioners said they were dissatisfied with the conduct of Mr Appiah-Kubi in the municipality.

According to the NPP executives, the action and inactions of the MCE have created disaffection for the government and NPP in the Mampong Municipality, indicating that it was unfortunate that those who laid down their lives had been marginalized.

The MCE refused to comment on the matter when DAILY GUIDE contacted him.

The petitioners stated that there has been lack of collaboration on a number of issues between the party and the MCE, Appiah-Kubi, who has continuously shown interest in his activities at the expense of the party interest.

They complained about “the colossal and insensitive attempt by our MCE to malign and sideline the entire party for his personal gains, which are geared towards the proposed election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the future.”

The constituency executives said the situation had reached crisis level, and if not attended to timely, could have dire consequences for the party in the constituency.

“Since his appointment a year ago, the MCE, by his action and inactions, has created disaffection among party faithful and supporters,” adding that his intransigent posture and uncooperative behaviour delayed the election of the presiding member.

The petitioners asserted that it took the intervention of the paramount chief of Mampong, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, to resolve the problems in March this year.

“Prior to this, there was brouhaha over school feeding allocation where the MCE initially allocated it to himself, families and friends. He has failed to involve the party in the Assembly’s activities.”

The NPP executives said the MCE had constituted a parallel council of constituency executives to deal with issues that are the preserve of the party leadership in the constituency.

Thomas Appiah-Kubi became the Mampong Municipal Chief Executive in May 2017 after receiving unanimous endorsement from 46 members of the Asante-Mampong Municipal Assembly.

Prior to his appointment by President Akufo-Addo and subsequent endorsement, Mr. Appiah-Kubi was a tutor at the Saint Monica’s Senior High School (SHS).
