Ashanti Regional Chief Imam, Sheik Abdul Mumin receiving a present from Herbert Mensah
Victims of the May 9 Disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium – then known as the Ohene Djan Stadium – in 2001 have been remembered with a series of events, including a walk.
One hundred and twenty seven people died in a stampede- which has been described as Africa’s worst stadium disaster- when two of Ghana’s traditional football clubs- Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak clashed.
The tragedy is remembered each year, and to mark the 17th anniversary, Herbert Mensah, who was the chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the time, donated GH?4,000 to take care of two kids on admission at the Mother and Baby Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
While one of the kids is said to have consumed soda, the other sustained burns on the head after falling into hot water.
He also donated GH?3,500 to support the construction of a building at the Kumasi Central Mosque, where prayers were said for him and the victims.
Mr. Mensah and his associates, driven by compassion, also donated some materials.
He said several individuals have supported the victims and called on benevolent people in society not to get tired of helping others.
“My associates and I want to touch lives directly and save people from all kinds of trouble,” he indicated.
