A ninety eight year old medical surgeon, Dr Emmanuel Evans-Anfom, has called on young doctors to be guided by the spirit of patriotism in the discharge of their mandate as life savers.

Dr Evans-Anfom stated this during a courtesy call paid on him at his residence at the Ringway Estate in Osu by the President of the Family Health Medical School, Prof Yao Kwawukume, faculty members and medical students of the Family Health Medical School (FHMS).

The surgeon, who holds the Alumnus of the Year Award from University of Edinburgh for his contribution to the development of medicine in the Republic of Congo, has worked in a number of hospitals in the country and was a one-time vice chancellor of KNUST, Kumasi, among other roles.

According to him, young doctors entering the profession have a lot to learn when they devote their energies on striving for excellence in the discharge of their duties.

“Do not make money your focus but always ascribe to playing your role so well to improve the health delivery system in your area of service, go by the ethics of the profession, resist any temptation to be a quack, consult where you have a challenge,” he advised.

While commending faculty members of the FHMS for their high level of coaching given to the students, he also urged the students to show humility in their dealings with their superiors in the profession so that they will impart their rich experiences to them.

Dr Evans-Anfomhas also advised the young doctors to develop interest in exploring opportunities in other areas outside their specialised professions.

“Doctors are good managers and for me it’s always important to explore avenues outside your domain, this however does not mean you should be a bad doctor,” he remarked.

Prof Kwawukume paid glowing tribute to the surgeon for his immense contributions towards the health delivery system in the country.
