Dr. Quarshie-Ngissah, Medical Director of Midway Hospital (M) with guests
Midway Hospital celebrated its 45th anniversary and unveiled a bust in honour of the late founder, Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie, in Accra on August 6, 2025.
The acting Regional Director of Ghana Health Service in Greater Accra, Dr. Robert Amesiya, praised the hospital’s impressive growth and commitment to quality healthcare, noting that many government-run facilities, even after decades, cannot match Midway’s achievements.
“I oversee Ghana Health Service in the region, and some of our health centres in over 50 years cannot boast of one quarter of what you are seeing today. So, it is a very good learning experience for me,” he said.
Dr. Amesiya also noted the financial challenges private institutions face, especially with overheard costs, and stated that he was impressed with Midway’s ability to expand and maintain advanced services like fertility care, despite not receiving government support.
He highlighted the importance of quality care, referencing positive patient testimonials from the hospital brochure, which he said was unusual, as complaints are more common in most hospitals.
“Key issues that easily come to mind during celebrations of this nature include issues of overhead costs for private institutions like this, for where I supervise, we withdraw our salaries from the Government of Ghana. Our utilities are paid by the Government of Ghana, and yet, we still struggle to survive. Now, just wondering, all the development projects that are springing up here, how are you able to do it? Maybe you will share some with us so that we can learn that our overhead costs are borne by the Government of Ghana, and we still struggle to survive,” he explained.
The Board Chair for Zenith Bank Ghana, Freda Yahan Duplan, commended the founder, the late Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie, for establishing Midway Clinic in 1980 as a patient-centred facility, which has since grown into a full hospital with 35 inpatient beds, over 10 speciality clinics, and advanced diagnostic services.
“Midway Clinic was started by the founder, Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie of blessed memory, in 1980. Dr. Joseph Ameni Quarshie, through his professionalism, worked to make Midway Clinic a patient-centred medical facility. Today, it has evolved into a hospital with a 35-bed inpatient ward covering more than 10 speciality clinics with multiple diagnostic services,” she stressed.
She applauded the family behind the hospital for their commitment to expanding private healthcare, and outlined the guiding principles behind Midway’s success: personalised service, innovation, staff development, integrity, professionalism, environmental sustainability, and growth.
“As a Ghanaian, I am particularly proud to see a Ghanaian family being intentional about advancing a private clinic into a hospital through robust succession planning, of which its execution is not for the faint-hearted,” she added.
