The police and military in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region have seized a cache of weapons including firearms, cartridges, and knives, in a joint operation aimed at containing recent violence in the area.
The joint operation, launched over the weekend marks a decisive response to the escalating violence that has gripped the area in recent weeks.
So far security personnel have arrested at least 16 individuals in connection with the unrest as authorities intensify investigations into illegal arms possession and related crimes.
The Security have also zeroed in on key conflict hotspots, where tensions have boiled over due to what local sources describe as a protracted land dispute among tribal factions.
On Wednesday January 1, 2025, the clashes turned deadly when unidentified assailants opened fire, killing several residents and leaving many others injured. In the aftermath, homes were set ablaze, forcing families to flee and plunging the community into fear and uncertainty.
Survivors are calling on the government and local stakeholders to ensure justice for the victims.
