The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has urged contractors working on the University of Local Governance and Development project to scale up efforts to ensure that the deadline for its completion which is November 2024 is met.
He explained that the project that commenced in 2020, when completed, would be a centre for specialised learning and teaching and also serve as a unit where all the human resources needs of the local government would be met.
Mr. Korsah said these when he toured the project site which included hostels and administration units to access its progress.
“So far, so good. We anticipate that as the contractor and the consultant are telling us, this project gets ready and handedover to us in November,” Mr. Korsah said.
He noted that he was impressed with the kind of work that had gone on at the project site with parts of it nearing completion.
Mr. Korsah noted that he was in the process of introducing a bill to parliament to ensure the finalisation of the project as it had already received presidential approval.
He also said there had been no hitches in relation to the establishment of the university as the government had made available funding.
Registrar of the Institute of Local Governance Studies (ILGS), David Osei-Wusi said it had gone through various stages of transformation since its establishment in 2003.
According to him, the university would be opened to all manner of persons interested in local governance.
He reveal that campus taking shape in Accra, include a 5-story lecture block, a 1,800-seat great hall and conference center, and over 500 executive hostel rooms for students.
He explained that he anticipated an increase in student population after the completion of the project with not less than 3000 students intake for a particular year as its current population was about 800.
