The Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh has blasted the Minority in Parliament on its decision to boycott parliamentary business on days when the newly elected Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson will appear in court.
According to Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the decision of the Minority is the most unfortunate, fraudulent, illogical, and shameful statement from them to boycott Parliamentary business since they were voted by their constituents to represent them.
The NDC MPs in a show of solidarity have taken a stance to abstain from Parliament when Gyakye Quayson appears in court for his ongoing criminal case.
At the swearing of Mr. Quayson as an MP for Assin North on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, announced that the entire caucus will accompany Mr. Quayson to court and refrain from engaging in the business of the House on those specific days.
“We wish to serve notice that the entire Minority will accompany our colleague today and any other days that he is to appear in court. We are solidarising with our colleague and we will not participate in the business of the House anytime our colleague is in court and we will be withdrawing from the Chamber after this ceremony if the court processes happen today.”
The Ajumako-Enyan-Esiam MP added that “The people of Assin North have sent a clear message to all politicians and the government of the day especially, that they cannot be lured with money, not be intimidated by threats and it is the same message that Ghanaians are sending to us that in the year 2024, they will exercise their franchise based on their conscience and no amount of threats will dissuade them from voting out the administration that we are witnessing.”
However, the Majority Chief Whip and MP for Nsawam/Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh Dompreh in a reaction to the Minority decision described it as ‘’Unfortunately and very shameful’’.
Speaking on Asempa Fm, Annoh-Dompreh explained that the decision to boycott Parliament’s business is illogical since they represent their constituents and had to be in the chambers to work.
Annoh-Dompreh explained that Parliament will work with or without the attendance of the Minority, and wont be close down for the sake of them.
The Nsawam MP added that ‘’the country is being governing by law, so if a colleague Member of Parliament is standing trial at the court and the Minority decision to boycott Parliament business is very shameful’’.
He further urged the Minority to respect the decision of the court, rather than come out with emotional statements to disturb the peace of the country.
He questioned why didn’t they previously go to the court in solidarity with James Quayason, when he was attending the court proceedings then today that they are trying to blackmail the country with this decision.
He further denounced the rumours trending that the Majority in Parliament has an interest in the Gyakye Quayson trial.
