Minority Protest Against BoG July 30

Mahama Ayariga

The NDC Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has indicated that members of the Minority will hit the streets again July 30, 2024 to demand the resignation of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor and his deputies.

According to him, Dr. Ernest Addison and his deputies have run down the Central Bank and messed up the economy by failing to hold inflation and implementing proper monetary policy, beside alleged procurement breaches on the construction of an office complex for the BoG.

He told the media in Parliament that the Minority had taken a stand that the Central Bank management must be held accountable for making it impossible for businesses to borrow and expand.

“They can’t mess up the economy the way that they have [done] and just be allowed to keep staying there and not be held accountable in any way,” Mr. Ayariga said.

He continued, “Quite apart from the issues of what we believe to be corruption in the procurement of the head office building and what we see as a refusal of the Central Bank governor to account,” they had resolved to force him to resign.

“And if you recall, when we demonstrated to the office, that’s the head office building, and we demanded that he receive a petition from us as a minority, he refused to be available to receive the petition and actually publicly described us as hooligans.

“And at that demonstration, if you recall, we said that we’re going, but that we would come back,” he stated.

“It is time to go back and we are marching back to the Central Bank to demand the resignation of the governor and his deputies and the board of the bank,” he stressed.

He disclosed that they had written to the Regional Police Commander, adding that they had indicated the route they wanted to use and the date they had given to the police was July 30, 2024.

“I have received an invitation from the regional police command for a meeting at two o’clock this afternoon,” he said.
