Popular musician, Wisa Greid of ‘Ekiki Mi’ fame, yesterday shocked everyone at an Accra court when he popped up in the court room at a time the court had issued a bench warrant for his arrest thrice and the police had not been able to find him.
Wisa is one of the headline artistes advertised to perform at the Gamashi Homowo music concert scheduled for this Saturday, August 6 at Bukom in Accra, but his fans and followers are wondering whether he can perform on that day despite a bench warrant for his arrest.
Looking very calm and smartly dressed, Wisa showed up in court just three days to the event and his lawyers succeeded in convincing the judge not to put him on remand.
Wisa Greid, known in private life as Eugene Ashe, had failed to appear before the Accra Domestic Violence and Gender Based court, where he is being tried for allegedly showing his penis to the public during a performance in December 2015.
For two months, the police had been on his heels in an attempt to grab the musician but claimed the search for him had been unsuccessful until his appearance yesterday to the utter shock of the prosecution led by Inspector Judith B. Asante.
Remand
Inspector Judith B. Asante told the court presided over by Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku that she was “shocked and surprised” to see Wisa in court. She asked the court to remand the accused.
Inspector Judith B. Asante argued that Wisa had jumped bail and ought to be remanded.
She said Jerry Avernogbor, lawyer for Wisa, knew that his client had jumped bail, but cannot say so, pointing out that the prosecution was ready with its witnesses for the trial, but was not sure the accused would resurface.
The police prosecutor stated that even if the court will not remand Wisa, he should be re-bailed under strict conditions.
Defense
Jerry Avernogbor disclosed that for the past two months his client had been in a situation – one that he could not tell the judge in open court.
He said at the last adjourned date, Wisa and the family came to his office where certain revelations were made to him.
The defense lawyer was emphatic that his client was sorry and that Wisa will not run away from the case which is not a case of rape or murder.
He urged the trial judge to give Wisa one more chance, adding that he would personally ensure that Wisa was incarcerated if he failed to show up in court again.
Jerry was of the view that the prosecution has no witnesses in the case
Ruling
Oppong Adjin-Doku in a ruling said having listened to both parties in the case, Wisa must make a GH¢5,000 security deposit.
She said two months was such a long time for Wisa not to be in court.
The trial judge accordingly revised his earlier GH? 8,000 bail with one surety.
Hearing was adjourned to Friday, August 12, 2016.
Background
Wisa is standing trial for allegedly showing his manhood during a live performance on December 24, 2015 during the ‘December 2 Remember’ event at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
There is a viral video of Wisa stripping and rubbing (what was suspected to be) his manhood against the buttocks of his female dancer.
Reports say the video was recorded on December 24, 2015 during the ‘December 2 Remember’ event at the AICC.
The video became a topical issue and eventually landed Wisa in court.
