Mobile Money
Mobile money transactions climbed to a record GH¢518.4 billion in December 2025, cementing the platform’s growing dominance in the nation’s payments landscape, according to the latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
The December outturn marked the highest monthly transaction value recorded in 2025, which reflects heightened consumer spending during the festive season alongside the continued expansion and acceptance of digital payment services across the economy.
The surge, the BoG said, underscores the central role mobile money now plays in facilitating retail and peer-to-peer transactions.
The report indicated that transaction volumes rose sharply to 982 million in December, from 892 million in November, which points to both increased spending activity and a broader shift by consumers and businesses towards cash-lite payment options.
The data also showed a strong expansion in the user base, with active mobile money accounts increasing to 26.7 million in December, compared with 25.5 million the previous month.
Registered accounts climbed to 80.5 million, which highlights sustained progress in financial inclusion.
The BoG said growth in usage has been supported by an expanding distribution network, and added that the number of active mobile money agents reached 491,000 by the end of December, which improves access to digital financial services, particularly in peri-urban and rural communities.
Balances held in mobile money wallets rose to GH¢39.6 billion, the highest level recorded in 2025.
Interoperable mobile money transactions also gained momentum during the month, with transaction values increasing to GH¢5.8 billion in December from GH¢4.9 billion in November.
The rise was attributed largely to higher cross-network transfers over the holiday period, reflecting the benefits of interoperability in deepening usage.
In contrast, traditional payment instruments continued to lag behind. Cheque transactions were valued at GH¢37.3 billion in December, a fraction of mobile money values, while electronic payment channels such as the GhIPSS Instant Pay recorded GH¢73.3 billion in transaction value during the same period.
