The Nkwanta North District in the Oti Region has recorded a confirmed case of Mpox, a viral disease that has raised global health concerns.
Mpox is a zoonotic viral infection transmitted from animals to humans, and also spreads between humans. The illness is characterised by fever, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes, which can lead to severe health complications in some cases.
Eric Kojo Agboka, District Health Director for Nkwanta North, disclosed that the patient had travelled from Accra’s Konkomba Market before showing symptoms consistent with Mpox. The case was promptly reported to health officials, leading to immediate medical intervention.
He noted that the District Health Directorate, in collaboration with local authorities, had moved quickly to contain the situation. Contact tracing has already been initiated to track down individuals who may have come into close contact with the patient.
“We have also intensified public health education in the affected communities to create awareness about the symptoms, transmission, and preventive measures against Mpox,” he added.
Isaac Dordoe, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Nkwanta North, urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any unusual symptoms to the nearest health facility.
“We are working closely with the health department to ensure that all necessary measures are in place to prevent further spread of the virus,” he added.
The Nkwanta North District Health Directorate says it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates to the public.
