Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak on the advice of the National Security Council, has lifted the curfew on Nalerigu township and its environs in the North East Region with immediate effect.
A statement signed by the minister said the decision has been necessitated by the genuine desire of the chiefs and people to sustain peace in the area, as well as the improvement in the security situation in the area.
“Government continues to express its gratitude to the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and people of the area, and urges them to continue to resort to peaceful means in solving their problems,” the statement disclosed.
It will be recalled that the Minister for the Interior, on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument, imposed curfew hours on Nalerigu and Walewale townships of the North East Region from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am, effective Thursday, July 31, 2025.
The Nalerigu curfew followed the killing of two students of the Nalerigu Senior High School by unidentified gunmen, who stormed the campus on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025.
The Walewale curfew was also imposed due to some suspected gun attacks by unknown assailants along the Walewale-Bolgatanga Highway.
About seven persons lost their lives due to gun attacks, with at least two buses completely burnt into ashes around Walewale and its environs.
Some persons have attributed the attacks to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.
