President Nana Akufo-Addo delivering his address at the May Day celebration
President Nana Akufo-Addo has charged Ghanaians to change their attitude of executing jobs poorly as it makes the taxpayers’ monies go waste.
President Akufo-Addo, who was not enthused about projects, that have been executed with inferior materials in various parts of the country, expressed disgust about how newly built public infrastructure, especially roads, deteriorate faster than expected after huge sums have been sunk into such projects.
“How come very old classroom blocks withstand storms and heavy rainfall while the roofs of nearby newly built ones are ripped of regularly?” he wondered.
“How come new roads that are expected to last at least five years do not make through even one rainy season? They fail and potholes appear,” he noted.
The president was worried that “The workers on the roads, the contractors and the consultants all conspire to deliver the shoddy work that prevents us from getting to where we ought to be.”
Nana Akufo-Addo, who delivered a speech at the 2017 May Day celebrations at the Independence Square on Monday, expressed disappointment and could not fathom why such individuals embark on such despicable acts.
He emphasised that such mindset does not help in nation building and that Ghanaians need to change their attitude if the country is to attain the level of development it seeks.
A visit to most parts of the capital, Accra, reveals that recently constructed roads, including one of the outer lanes of the multimillion-dollar Kwame Nkrumah Circle road, have developed potholes.
Most of the recently asphalted roads in Accra under the John Mahama National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration are in deplorable state.
Some of the new roads are the one-way lane from Accra Mall to Spintex Road, the Spintex Road itself and Bush Road at Teshie Rasta.
