Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to get straight to work if elected president, forgoing a traditional honeymoon period.
“I am definitely not taking a honeymoon, we are going to get straight to work to put things in place, the focus is on jobs, the first hundred days, we are going to be very hard at work,” Dr. Bawumia said during a media engagement in Accra on Sunday, August 25.
This vow comes after Bawumia touted the success of the Gold for Oil program, which he claims saved the economy from collapse.
“Without the gold purchase program and the gold for oil program, this economy would have collapsed,” he said.
“We had to take bold decisions to stabilize the economy, and the Gold for Oil program was one of them,” Dr Bawumia stated.
However, opposition leader John Dramani Mahama has criticized the program, stating that it was a “knee-jerk reaction” to the economic crisis.
“The Gold for Oil program is not a sustainable solution to our economic problems,” Mahama said in a previous statement. “We need a comprehensive approach to address the challenges facing our economy, not just a quick fix.”
Dr Bawumia’s promise to forego a honeymoon period and get straight to work may be seen as an attempt to differentiate himself from his opponent, John Dramani Mahama who has asked for a period of honeymoon upon his election.
“I will not ask for a honeymoon, I will get straight to work,” Bawumia emphasized.
“The focus is on jobs, and we will work tirelessly to create opportunities for Ghanaians,” Bawumia added.
