Some Ghanaians likened our situation in 2023 to Armageddon and our country is next to hell because the prices of goods and services had gone beyond the reach of many people.
The prophets of doom predicted the worse Christmas ever in our history. Quite surprisingly, the testimony from some traders is the direct opposite of what the naysayers were espousing.
A visit to our markets and shopping malls shows that Ghanaians from all walks of life patronise all kinds of merchandise to celebrate Xmas and the New Year festivities.
Today, the wish of the opposition NDC is for Ghana to fall on hard times so that the party’s flagbearer and the supporters can use it to campaign against the ruling NPP.
Backed by a section of civil society, academia and journalists, the NDC has refused to credit President Akufo-Addo and his government with any good initiative towards the development of the country. The NDC and its supporters call the President all kinds of names and refused to acknowledge the strides the country is making even in the midst of the challenges.
Suddenly, John Mahama sees himself as a saint on a mission to rescue the country. He is reported to have said he is the saviour to lead Ghana. And in tune with our politics, Mahama has been buoyed on by some charlatan religious leaders who are predicting win for the NDC in this year’s elections.
Some commentators have said the failings of President Akufo-Addo in certain sectors make former President Mahama’s incompetence pale into insignificance. Except for those who have short memories, majority of the people still bear the scars of John Mahama’s incompetence resulting in more than four years dumsor into the polling booth on December 7, 2024.
We are not oblivious to the challenges of our time but it is only those with wooden glasses on who cannot see the efforts of the government post-Covid to turn the economy around.
The way some Ghanaians including commentators and analysts talk, it is our wish sometimes that Ghanaians make the mistake again to vote for John Mahama to cause more havoc to the country.
Frankly speaking, however, the Mahama alternative is abominable. Judging from what we saw during the Xmas festivities, we are firm in our resolve that the can do spirit of the Ghanaian is still alive. The young Afua Asantewaa Aduonum rekindled that spirit during her attempt to break the Guinness World Record of singing for 105 hours held by an Indian.
During the Sing-a-thon at the Akwaaba Village, Afua Asantewaa managed to break that record by singing for 126 hours 52 minutes, now waiting for official affirmation by Guinness World Record. Afua Asantewaa showed resilience and determination that was boosted by the sheer show of solidarity by Ghanaians that any feat at all is attainable provided we set our minds to it.
