NPP Candidate Quits On Health Grounds

Shaharawi Bashiru

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Karaga Constituency in the Northern Region, Shaharawi Bashiru, has resigned on health grounds.

Information available indicates that the candidate had an accident on the Kumasi-Kintampo road on board a V8 vehicle belonging to the deputy youth organizer of the NPP when he was traveling to Tamale.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that he was with two others when the vehicle crashed into a tree, killing the two other persons on board instantly.

Mr Shaharawi Bashiru and the others were declared dead and were reportedly brought to the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue for preservation, but upon reaching the morgue they realized that he was alive.

The attention of the hospital authorities was drawn and he was sent to the intensive care unit for treatment. He was said to be in coma for over two weeks until the doctors revived him.

The Northern Regional Secretary of the NPP, Sule Salifu, who confirmed the resignation to DAILY GUIDE, said Shaharawi Bashiru resigned to enable him to receive intensive treatment.

According to him, the candidate went outside the country for treatment and doctors abroad advised him not to do any campaign and that he needed to be on surveillance for at least three months.

Sule Salifu indicated that the general election is barely three months away and the candidate decided to resign because of his condition so as to pave way for someone to represent the party.

He told DAILY GUIDE that the candidate had voluntarily submitted the report from the overseas doctors and his resignation letter to the party.

The NPP therefore, opened nominations Monday and closed them on Tuesday. Vetting will be on Wednesday and the elections will be held on Saturday. So far three persons have picked the forms. They are Mrs Sule, the former DCE for Karaga; Wahab and Basha.
