The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned the Opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) stance on the peace declaration accord for the 2024 general elections, calling it “unfortunate” and “incendiary.”
This follows the statement made by the NDC National Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah, on Joy News’ PM Express that the party will not sign the peace declaration ahead of the elections.
Asiedu Nketiah’s statement has sparked outrage, with the NPP accusing the NDC of “beating the drums of war” and preparing their supporters to reject the election outcome.
The NPP in a statement condemned the conduct of the NDC to embark on such move.
“The NPP finds the comment by the NDC National Chairman very unfortunate and condemns it in no uncertain terms, given the worrying and incendiary nature of the statement,” said Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the NPP in a statement.
He explained that the NPP has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and stability before, during, and after the elections, and has called on the NDC to reconsider their posture.
“We wish to reiterate our firm assurance to Ghanaians that the NPP remains solemnly committed, in words and in deeds, to maintaining the peace and stability of this country… and will accept its outcome in good faith,” Frimpong said.
“The NPP has a history of committing to the peace accord, even when they have had concerns about the electoral process. “Since 2008, the NPP has always committed to signing the Peace Accord, either in government or opposition… despite challenging the outcome of the 2012 general elections results in court,” Frimpong noted.
The party has called on the National Peace Council, Civil Society Organisations, Religious and Traditional Authorities, and all well-meaning Ghanaians to condemn the NDC’s statement and urge them to use appropriate channels to resolve any grievances.
The NDC Chairman, Asiedu Nketiah’s statement has raised questions about the NDC’s commitment to peace and stability in the country.
“Ironically, despite the NDC’s stated stance, they continue to be represented at the Peace Council, IPAC, and national Security meetings. Why are they unable to maintain a principled stance to the peace and stability of Ghana?” Frimpong asked.
However, the NPP has assured Ghanaians that the country will not experience any war regardless of the election outcome.
“Ghanaians are peace-loving people, and by the grace of God, Ghana will not experience any war… The will of the Ghanaians will always prevail,” the statement noted.
