Traders at the Kumasi Central Business Area have openly endorsed Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, saying he is the “fresh face” in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 presidential election.
At a press conference on Monday, June 23, 2025, the traders, mostly secondhand fabric and shoe dealers, declared their full support for the former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, urging NPP delegates to vote massively for him in the party’s flagbearer contest slated for January next year.
“We believe Dr. Yaw Adutwum is the fresh face the party needs. He connects with ordinary people like us. Under his leadership, we can hope for better policies for market women and traders,” one of the traders said.
The group described Dr. Adutwum as a visionary leader with a deep understanding of their daily struggles, and commended his track record in both education and community development.
They credited him as a key figure behind the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, recounting his vital role in making the initiative a reality.
“He was the rock on which Nana (President Akufo-Addo) did the Free SHS. When Nana Addo saw him managing his schools successfully in the US with free education there, he called him to Ghana to help introduce Free SHS here, and Dr. Adutwum delivered perfectly,” another trader said.
The traders also praised Dr. Adutwum for his quick response when parts of the Kumasi market were gutted by fire, noting that he provided significant financial support to help affected traders rebuild their businesses.
“Dr. Adutwum understands business. When our market got destroyed by fire, he came and supported us with big money. He was there for us when we needed help,” they emphasised.
They further applauded his efforts in making the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector more attractive to Ghanaian youth, describing his contributions as key to accelerating national development. His work in promoting Science, Mathematics, and Technology education across the country also received high praise.
The Kumasi traders believe that Dr. Adutwum’s leadership will bring fresh energy and practical solutions to the NPP and the nation.
“We need someone who is clean, innovative, and ready to focus on the needs of everyday Ghanaians. Dr. Adutwum is that fresh face,” they stated.
The traders again called on NPP delegates to choose Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as the party’s flagbearer, expressing confidence that he will represent the best interests of traders, market women, and the wider Ghanaian public.
