Supporter of the NPP being treated at the hospital

Members of the Bawumia Youth for Change, a group in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress’ Zaadiaya Youth Group, which supports the Northern Regional Minister, who doubles as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Walewale constituency, clashed on Saturday evening.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicated that supporters of the two political parties launched their campaign activities in the same vicinity.

The paper gathered that but the timely intervention of the police, many lives would have been lost due to the deadly weapons in the possession of supporters of the two main parties.

Reports said that one of the supporters, who sustained cutlass wounds, is currently on admission at the Walewale Government Hospital, while the rest are nursing their wounds at home.

The NPP constituency Secretary Simon Ali, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said their opponents deliberately organized a counter rally close to the venue of the Bawumia Youth for Change.

According to him, the party has since lodged an official complaint to the Walewale Police.

He indicated that the NPP as a law-abiding political tradition would resist any acts of hooliganism as the general elections draw closer.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the NDC Walewale constituency Communications Director, Imoro Abdul Razak, said that the supporters of the NPP initially launched the attack on the NDC which led to the clashes.

He narrated that supporters of the NPP, who were on motorbikes, crossed the NDC who were in a convoy on the Tamale-Walewale main road to welcome the Northern Regional Minister to the venue.

According to him, three NDC supporters got injured during the clash but they were quickly transported to the hospital for treatment.

He stated that the NDC youth supporters would defend themselves anytime the NPP launches any attack.

On Monday, July 11, 2016, some NDC loyalists defected to the NPP at a news conference in Walewale, citing economic hardship, tribalism, among others, as reasons for their defection.
