Executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have proposed the establishment of a street market for Kumasi to ease congestion in some parts of the city.
The traders sometimes clash with the city guards in the city.
The executives of the ruling political party believe that the proposal would help decongest the city.
Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka ‘Wontumi,’ the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, said city authorities have been informed about the policy.
“We were receiving complaints from traders and drivers to the effect that there have been clashes between them and city guards.
“And as a party, we summoned a meeting between the regional minister and the Kumasi Mayor and suggested the street market policy.”
Wontumi explained that some roads in Kumasi should be closed for traders to sell their wares on particular days.
“Some big cities have successfully implemented this policy, and I believe Kumasi must do same. “We need the street market, especially as the Christmas festivities, is fast approaching,” Wontumi told Nhyira Fm.
He also called for a Christmas Trade Fair in Kumasi to help traders to sell their wares to make profit ahead of the yuletide.
