The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Ghana is calling for accountability from the government following the alleged disappearance of long standing salary arrears of its members from the official payment voucher.
In a statement issued yesterday, the group expressed shock at the poor level of transparency within the public pay roll system.
The group argued that its members consistently had their salary arrears validated on the government’s payroll system monthly regardless of not receiving actual payments, noting that during the most recent validation for February 2026, the accumulated arrears allegedly “suddenly and completely disappeared” from their payment vouchers.
“When this alarming issue was brought to the attention of the public, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department moved swiftly to deny our claims. This denial is shocking and unacceptable,” it stated.
It further stated that payroll validators and Human Resource Officers across various health facilities have independently confirmed that the arrears were cleared from the payment vouchers of affected nurses and midwives without any corresponding payment being made.
The group thus questioned what constituted the removal of the arrears.
“Our questions are: who authorized the removal of our legitimately earned arrears and on what legal or administrative basis were these arrears cleared? the statement questioned.
The coalition further indicated that this action reinforces the long held concerns about lack of transparency in handling the salaries of nurses and midwives and described the incident as “deeply dishonest”.
The nurses stated that they cannot accept the situation of their arrears being erased from official records and called on the government to investigate the matter and ensure a full payment of their arrears stating that failure to address the issue will trigger an action from the group.
