President Akufo-Addo cutting the sod to commission the water project
PRESIDENT Akufo-Addo has commissioned the Akim Oda, Akwatia-Winneba Water Supply project, which was constructed with a $164 million facility from the Turkish Exim Bank, with $28 million counterpart funding from the Government of Ghana.
The project, which has the capacity to produce 35,400 cubic litres of water daily, was started during the Kufuor administration. It includes an off-river reservoir on the Birim River; a water treatment plant; a ground water reservoir at Asene; a 4,000m3 ground level reservoir at Bamanase; a 2,000m3 ground water tank at Winneba; 212.6km distribution network at Akim Oda; 18km distribution network at Akim Manso; 33.7km transmission mains from Asene to Akwatia; and 250m3 elevated water tank at Manso, Amantem, No.4 Camp and Winneba.
The $164 million water project was financed by the Exim Bank of Turkey. It would serve 82 other communities in two municipalities; the Birim Central Municipality in the Eastern Region, the Efutu Municipality in the Central Region and the Denkyembour District in the Eastern Region.
In their eight-year regime, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) abandoned the project. Fortunately, the current administration has completed it.
President Akufo-Addo, who was on a three-day inspection tour of the Eastern Region, assured the people that his government would not disappoint them.
According to him, his government would deliver on every single promise it made to Ghanaians prior to the 2016 general elections.
He urged the people to give a strong backing to the implementation of the various interventions and programmes aimed at making life better for everybody.
The President entreated the traditional authorities in Akim-Kotoku to move quickly to resolve chieftaincy disputes in the area.
He applauded the Turkish government for its support for the nation’s socio-economic transformation.
Later in the day, President Akufo-Addo commissioned a new Science Resource Centre at Ayirebi Senior High School, and a new District Police Headquarters at Ofoase.
