Hajia Fati Bapuni, a teacher, who attempted to go and pick up her child during torrential rains, has died.
Some residents tried to rescue the teacher, 59 , but unfortunately she died in the floods.
The body of the deceased has been conveyed to the morgue of the Tamale Teaching Hospital pending autopsy.
The relatives of the deceased visited the hospital and identified the body.
Some residents sustained severe injuries during the heavy downpour and have been admitted at the hospital for treatment.
Information gathered indicates that about five pupils were carried away by the floods in various parts of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital.
An eyewitness Mr. Mohammed told DAILY GUIDE that he saw the body of a boy in a gutter.
Akins Poku, PRO of the Ghana National Fire Service, said firefighters have been deployed to all affected communities.
He, however, revealed that bodies have not been found.
A heavy downpour has left parts of the Northern Regional capital submerged.
The affected areas include Kuko, Jisnayili, Chingyili.
The Gynecology Department of the Tamale Teaching Hospital has partly been submerged.
It would be recalled that last year, parts of the region were flooded with properties worth over millions of cedis being destroyed.
The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, appealed to government agencies and NGOs to come to the aid of the region.
The Regional Minister revealed that roads linking Tamale to Karaga, Yendi and Bimbila, have been destroyed by the floods.
Fire fighters and quick response team have been deployed to the affected communities.
The Minister called for calm in the region to enable his outfit address the challenges.
“The rescue teams are still searching for the bodies. I have received a report that a woman was killed in her car by the floods.”
Major areas in Tamale and Sanarigu have all been flooded.
“I appeal to all philanthropists, individuals, corporate organizations and NGOs to come to the aid of the affected victims,” the Minister said.
He called on the Ministry of Roads to fix the roads in the region.
Travelers from Accra, Northern Volta will also have difficulty making their way into the Northern Regional capital.
