Tragedy struck in the Bunkpurugu/Nakpanduri District of Ghana’s North East Region, as one person lost his life and several others were injured in a chieftaincy dispute that has been simmering for years.
The conflict, which erupted between the Naniik and Binbagu communities, has left residents fleeing for their lives, abandoning their homes and belongings.
A History of Conflict
Bunkpurugu has struggled with chieftaincy succession disputes, dating back to the Louk family’s internal conflicts.
These disputes have often turned violent, causing destruction and displacement.
The district’s location in the northeastern corner of the Northeast Region, bordering Togo, has also contributed to its volatility.
The Latest Incident
The recent violence began when the Youth Chief of Nanik was shot, resulting in the death of Elijah.
A second attack on Monday, September 23, sparked a reprisal attack from the Naniik community, forcing residents to flee.
Local authorities have imposed a 5:30 am to 6 pm curfew to calm the situation.
Human Toll
Three people are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, while others sustained snake bites during their frantic escape.
The true extent of the damage and displacement remains unknown.
The District Security Council is working to restore order, but national intervention is awaited.
The conflict highlights the need for effective conflict resolution mechanisms to address the root causes of these disputes.
