A scene at the village
One person was shot dead while three others sustained severe injuries at Abrewanko in the Asante Akyem North District of the Ashanti Regional after gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attacked the community.
Nine others also sustained other injuries in the incident said to have occurred in the night of Wednesday.
The joint military and police taskforce, known as Operation Cow Leg, was called to Abrewanko on Thursday morning after gunshots were fired.
District Chief Executive (DCE) of the area, Francis Oti Boateng, who confirmed the story, said the deceased had been identified as Agya Mensah.
According to him, the body of Agya Mensah, which was riddled with bullets, was found in the bush by the taskforce after a search for people who had gone missing following the attack.
He stated that the injured, who were taken to hospital, are currently responding to treatment, while security has been beefed up in the area.
Mr. Boateng narrated that the gunmen, numbering about seven and believed to be Fulani herdsmen, fled on two motorbikes shortly after the incident.
It’s unclear what triggered the latest violence at Abrewanko.
It’s the fifth attack on the residents in what many consider to be reprisal attacks by the Fulani herdsmen who were evacuated from the community and its environs.
Officials believe there could be more injured victims who have not yet been contacted or seen by the security.
