The President of the Rotary Club of Accra-East, Rotarian Haruna Mumuni, has called on students of Nii Otto Kwame Municipal Assembly school to seek career guidance from qualified individuals to help them make the right career choices in life.
“Education is not all about sitting in the classroom, you need a matured person to guide you through your studies and your career selection. Your peers cannot help you make informed career choices”.
He said this during a book donation and career guidance project carried out by the Rotary Club of Accra- East and the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT) Open Labs at Pokuase over the weekend.
The over 750 text books which covers subjects in Mathematics, Integrated Science, Information Communication Technology, Social Studies among others, is part of the Club’s support towards one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus; which is Basic Education and Literacy.
Rotarian Mumuni said that although it is the culture of Rotary Clubs to provide support towards resolving community problems, they do that through effective engagement with project beneficiaries, adding that such approach will ensure selected projects are the priorities of communities.
The Headmaster of the School, Mr. Hayford Ahiatorgu on his part explained that the school is in dire need of texts books due to the implementation of the Standard Base Curriculum by the Ghana Education Service in 2020, stressing that the gesture will go a long way to support and promote effective learning among the students.
Touching on some pertinent challenges faced by the school, Mr. Ahiatorgu mentioned that students and staff of the school will feel safe if the school is supported with a wall fence to ward off intrusion and encroachment from members of the community.
He added that the primary block which was constructed by the Parent Teachers Association needs a facelift.
Mr. Augustin Danso, Head of Academics, NIIT Open Labs who took the students through an Information Communication Technology (ICT) career guidance session reminded the students that there are endless opportunities in the field, stressing on the need for them to open their minds and learning efforts towards these opportunities.
He further noted that his outfit will provide free training support to the best student of the school.
President Elect of the Rotaract Club of Accra-East, Ms. Ohenewaa Brown who took the students through a session on “The Future is Studies”, challenged the students to commit to their studies as that will help them to be successful at their careers.
“Success is not achieved in a day, it takes hard work, planning, calculated risk and perseverance to get there. The successful people you see around dedicated their time to their chosen fields” she added.
Mr. Kwaku Yeboah, a member of the Rotary Club of Accra-East Project Committee also encouraged the students to take into consideration their capacity and interest in a field of their choice.
According to him, success in the career of every individual can be made easier if they have the capacity to fund as well as the interest to contain the set backs and difficulties that comes with career development.
