The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a total of 18,774,159 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in the upcoming general election on December 7.
According to the Commission, the figure includes 18,640,811 of voters with biometric data, 131,478 special voters, and 1,870 voters without biometric data.
In a statement released yesterday, the EC explained that the special voters include members of essential services who will vote early to ensure their availability on election day.
The Commission stated that members of the essential services are officers of the security agencies, media personnel and EC officials.
It said the other categories include individuals with and without biometric data—either fingerprints or facial recognition data—required for identity verification at the polling stations.
The EC also clarified the category of “Absent Voters,” specifying that this figure will encompass special voters and transferred voters.
The EC disclosed that a number of polling stations had administratively closed either due to their failure to meet the required minimum voter threshold or following legitimate requests from local communities.
It added that as a result, affected voters have been transferred to nearby polling stations.
“Voters from these closed stations were transferred to other polling stations,” the Commission stressed.
