Patience Ozokwor (M) flanked by others
Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, affectionately known as “Mama G,” has been awarded an honorary doctorate in Theatre and Media Arts by the Achievers Network Academy in the United Kingdom.
The 66-year-old icon received the honour on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at a ceremony organised by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to celebrate her immense contributions to Nollywood and African cinema.
The event also honoured Yoruba actors Adebayo Salami and Jide Kosoko for their legendary roles in the Nigerian film industry.
It was attended by notable celebrities, family, and friends who gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of these trailblazers.
Taking to Instagram to express her joy, Patience Ozokwor wrote: “Today felt like a movie. Honorary Doctorate Degree. Thank you, UNILAG. Thank you.”
The honorees were lauded for their pivotal roles in elevating Nollywood to global prominence.
Their efforts have shaped the industry through memorable performances, mentoring young talent, and promoting African culture through film.
Patience Ozokwor’s illustrious career began as a radio announcer before her breakout role in the 1999 film Authority.
With over 100 movies to her name, she remains a celebrated figure for her performances in classics such as Ukwa (2001), Blood Sister (2003), and Billionaires Club (2003).
Her legacy continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors in Nigeria and beyond.
