Oseadeeyo Dr. Frimpong Manso IV, King of the Akyem Kotoku State, has called on the central government to consider providing monthly salaries to assembly members.

His appeal came during a visit from assembly members representing approximately 12 districts in the Eastern Region, who met with him on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in Accra.

During a roundtable discussion, the assembly members shared the various challenges they encountered in fulfilling their duties and the extent of their commitment to assisting their communities, along with the associated costs.

In response, Oseadeeyo encouraged them to continue their dedicated service to the nation, stating, “The service you render to your people and, by extension, to the nation cannot be underestimated.”

He expressed concern over the current state of local governance and emphasised the need for improvements. Specifically, he stressed the importance of compensating assembly members with salaries.

“Assembly members are often the first point of contact when communities face challenges,” Oseadeeyo noted. “However, what can motivate them to give their best is often overlooked. Paying monthly salaries would not only incentivise them but also allow them to dedicate more time and resources to serving their communities.”

Oseadeeyo Frimpong Manso IV argued that this lack of compensation can lead to disinterest, hinder accountability, and reduce the effectiveness of assembly members’ work.

“By providing salaries, the government can ensure that these individuals can focus on their responsibilities without financial concerns. This approach could ultimately lead to improved governance and more effective local development,” he added.
