Asunafo South Member of Parliament (MP) Eric Opoku
THE POLICE in the Asunafo South District of the Brong-Ahafo Region have denied an allegation that hooligans who smashed the windscreens of vehicles belonging to the Asunafo South Member of Parliament (MP) Eric Opoku, are members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
District Police Commander, DSP Kwesi Boakye, told DAILY GUIDE on the phone that though the police had not arrested anybody yet, they could not say that those who attacked the MP’s private residence last Sunday were card-bearing members of the NPP.
Regional crime officer, Superintendent Nana Kwaku-Duah, collaborating his district commander’s information on the phone, said investigations were ongoing to arrest the culprits, adding, “Sankore is such that as soon as people commit crime, they run into the bush and resurface later. We are after them. We cannot say because an NDC man was attacked, the attackers are NPP people.”
According to the police, the mirror on the driver’s mate side of the official vehicle of the MP was smashed together with three other vehicles’ windscreens.
DSP Kwesi Boakye said other commercial vehicles (taxis) parked in front of the former minister’s house too were vandalized but nobody was hurt in the attack.
In an interview with some journalists, Mr Eric Opoku said he was in the town to meet with his constituents to render account on the year’s activities when he was informed about some men who were planning to attack him. He said the venue was quickly moved to the next floor of the building when all of a sudden, some men started throwing stones into his house, resulting in the damaging of the windscreens and mirror of the vehicles.
The matter has since been reported to the police and investigations are underway.
