The Ghana Police Service has categorically denied claims circulating on social media that Malik Basintale, the Deputy Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared wanted.
In an official statement, the Police described the rumors as false and urged the public to disregard them.
The service emphasized that there is no ongoing manhunt for Basintale and that the circulating claim holds no truth.
This development comes after the NDC expressed outrage over the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) instruction to arrest Basintale, allegedly in connection with his comments on Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, the Police have denied any such move, stating that the information is false and should be treated with contempt.
The NDC had accused the government of trying to silence its critics and undermine the opposition, with National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi and National Youth Organizer George Opare Addo expressing their support for Basintale.
The party claimed that sources within the CID Headquarters believed that the arrest of Basintale had the potential to greatly affect the current peace in the country.
However, with the Police denying any such move, it appears that the NDC’s concerns may have been unfounded.
The development has sparked a heated debate on social media, with some users accusing the NDC of crying wolf and others praising the Police for their prompt denial of the allegations.
As the country prepares for the 2024 elections, the incident has highlighted the need for political parties to be mindful of their actions and for the Police to maintain their neutrality.
In a related development, the NDC has been accused of trying to whip up emotions and create unnecessary tension in the country.
The party’s response to the alleged arrest of Basintale has been described as premature and unwarranted, with some users calling for greater restraint and maturity.
