Police Gun Down 2 Robbers At Tema

THE POLICE in Tema, Greater Accra Region, have confirmed that they shot and killed two suspected armed robbers who opened fire on personnel in an attempted robbery incident at Community 11 Shell filling station, Tema, Monday night.

The suspected armed robbers, on a motorbike, were said to have attacked a resident and when the police patrol team got to the scene, they opened fire on them (police) and the team also returned fire, leading to the death of the two.

According to the police, one of the deceased robbers identified as Raymond Banini alias Short Capo, was known to them as a notorious armed robber whose case is pending before the Ashaiman circuit court.

The bodies of the robbers have been deposited at the Police Hospital pending autopsy, and the motorbike, a locally manufactured pistol supposedly used for the robbery operation and a lady’s handbag are currently in the custody of the police.

Explaining the circumstance to DAILY GUIDE, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Benefo Darkwah – spokesperson for the Tema Regional Police Command – said that on Monday, January 22, 2018, at about 9:50 pm, the police received a distress call from a victim that she was being attacked by robbers.

A police patrol team was quickly dispatched to the scene where they met the suspects on a motorbike.

“When the patrol team arrived at the scene, the pillion rider (armed robber) with a gun, fired at the police. Police returned fire and the robber was hit, while the other robber ran for cover,” according to ASP Darkwah.

The other robber attempted to escape with the motorbike but was given a hot chase and cornered at the Kpone Landfill site, near Tema, where he was shot during another exchange of fire.

He added that “both robbers were rushed to the Police Hospital where they were pronounced dead by medics at the heath facility.”

In a related development, six suspected armed robbers are in the grips of the Kpone District police for allegedly attacking residents at Sackie-Bediako in the Kpone Katamansu District of the Greater Accra Region yesterday dawn.

The regional command reiterated its appeal to the public to be extra vigilant in their communities and report suspicious movements.
