Two suspected armed robbers have been gunned down by the police along the Achimota–Ofankor highway in Accra.
The yet-to-be identified men, according to the police, engaged them in a fierce gun battle after the hoodlums attacked a victim at his residence at Tantra Hills.
Whilst escaping with their booty, the police spotted them and started pursuing them, leading to the gun battle.
The suspects, according to DSP Effia Tenge, the Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, both died on the spot.
DSP Tenge said around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 2020, the victim was returning home after work when the hoodlums on a motorbike attacked him at Tantra Hills.
She said in front of his gate, the two criminals pulled a knife on him and ordered him to surrender every valuable item on him.
“The riders searched the victim’s pocket and took his Samsung mobile phone and cash of GH¢80.00 after which they bolted,” she said.
DSP Tenge said the victim, after the criminals had left the scene, called the Mile 7 police for assistance and an immediate message was sent to all the patrol teams in the area to be on the lookout for the suspects.
“The two men were later spotted on the main road near the St. John’s Senior High School and in an attempt to apprehend them one of the suspects pulled out a pistol and started firing at the police officers.
“The officers returned fire immediately and in the process the two were gunned down. The police found a pistol with seven rounds of ammunition and cash they purportedly robbed from the victim,” she narrated.
Meanwhile, the victim in the case, according to the police, has since identified the two men as his attackers.
