A donation exercise organised by the President of the Mensah Sarbah Hall Alumni Association and a Member of the Council of State, Francis Albert Seth Nyonyo was a highlight of a fast breaking session, Iftar, organised by Muslims in Mensah Sarbah Hall, University of Ghana recently.
The event was not only aimed at providing support to the Muslim community but also at promoting unity and love among Muslims and Christians, as well as encouraging the youth to be nationalist. One of the notable lessons shared by the dignitary was the importance of fasting. He emphasised that fasting, which involves the abstinence from food and drink, has been practiced by Muslims for centuries during Ramadan. Fasting has been known to have spiritual benefits, but it also has medical and health benefits, he said.
According to him, fasting helps in weight loss, reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes, and improves brain function.
Both Islam and Christianity have their roots in the Abrahamic religion, he said.
He encouraged Muslims and Christians in Ghana to continue to respect and support each other.
The President of the Alumni Association also admonished that prayers are powerful and have a significant impact, but everyone should also be physically hardworking. The Bible and Quran advise that the hand that does not work should not eat, he added.
In his final words, he advised that it’s important for everyone to take time for themselves, to cultivate good health, good habits, and good companionship, while also taking personal safety and security as one’s responsibility. Present at the Iftar were Alhaji Dr. Sidick Abubakar Ahmed who happens to be a Deputy Registrar of the University of Ghana, Station Manager of Radio Univers as well as the National Organiser of the Mensah Sarbah Hall Alumni Association, the Senior Tutor of the hall, Dr. Daniel Darko, Mr. Abraham Kumado, who is the Bursar and some hall assistants. The facilitator of the programme was Afelik A. Agoba, Mensah Sarbah Hall Alumni Coordinator.
The programme was organised by the Mensah Sarbah Alumni in collaboration with Ghana Muslims Students Association, UG, Sarbah Hall chapter.
