Senegal President Macky Sall
SENEGAL’S PRESIDENT, Macky Sall, is due to be sworn into office to begin his second term of five years.
Mr. Sall emerged winner on February 28, 2019, with 58 percent of the votes in an election opposition leaders believed was rigged.
He faced accusation of preventing some of his main rivals from running.
DGN Online understands that two well-known opposition figures were barred from taking part because of corruption convictions.
The opposition candidates rejected the results, with Idrissa Seck, a former prime minister who placed second with 21 percent of the votes, telling journalists that “It is clear that the incumbent candidate has confiscated the will of the Senegalese people and will be alone to face the consequences before the people and before history.”
Today’s inauguration ceremony to be held in the nation’s capital, Dakar, is expected to be attended by a number of African leaders including Liberian President, George Weah who is facing allegations back home of leading a 24-member delegation to Senegal for the function which Liberians feel did not need such high number of persons from the country which is grappling with economic challenges and ought to control public spending.
