Six people, including two children and a pregnant woman, have died in a boat accident on the Volta Lake.
The unfortunate accident reportedly occurred in the Affram Plains North District of the Eastern Region.
The deceased were identified as Victoria Akoto, 69, Rebecca Same, 46, Vena Akpaglo, 42, Patience Afete, 28,  Kekeli Akpaglo, 2, and Stanley Dakatsey, a 1-year-old.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the accident to DAILY GUIDE, said the members of a community called Bumbe were returning from a funeral at Foekope when the accident happened.
He said the accident occurred on Saturday at about 5pm when the canoe, which had nine passengers and powered by an outboard motor, encountered a strong wind on the lake.
According to the Regional Police spokesperson, the strong wind on the lake caused the boat to capsize, killing six of the passengers but the others managed to swim to safety.
He added that police preliminary investigations showed that the deceased were without life jackets and died in an area near the Dwarf Island.
ASP Tetteh said the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Donkokrom Presbyterian Hospital morgue, while one of the survivors was treated and discharged at the health facility.
