TEACHERS AND students of Rahmaniyya Islamic Basic School at Community 11, in Tema are risking their lives following the discovery of shrine with snakes in the school.
The situation has become worrisome as result of the collapse of the fence wall which separates the school from the abandoned shrine.
Snakes and other reptiles find comfort in the classrooms, exposing lives to danger.
This has reportedly affected enrollment as parents, mostly Muslims are not prepared to enroll their wards in the school since teachers and students often battle with reptiles.
Students and teachers are often greeted by snakes which cause them to disperse from classrooms and therefore disrupt academic activities.
Giving details about the shrine, Caretaker of the place, Hossan Haroun told DGN Online during a tour of some schools by the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, Felix Mensah Annan-La in collaboration with the Tema Metropolitan Education Directorate, that the shrine was owned by Fetish Priest who was only identified as Lady J where people usually visits and have spiritual celebrations.
The fetish priest unfortunately passed on outside the country.
Some members of the shrine including relative of the fetish priest came for some of the items from the shrine immediately news broke about the death of the woman.
“Somewhere in 2013 when the woman died, some people came for the things here including some snakes but I later saw some snakes here when I came to occupy this place and I killed them. I also sprayed this place and burnt tyres to scare them away,” the caretaker stated.
Meanwhile, the house including the shrine has purportedly been sold to a Chinese national last year who is yet to occupy the place but often visits.
Speaking on the intention of the Assembly on the situation, Mayor of Tema said the assembly would be getting in touch with the traditional authorities in the area including the environmental department of the assembly to address the situation.
“We have sprayed the yard against rodents, covid19 and other animals but the concern of the teachers are very serious. We need to embark on special exercise together with the traditional council to address the situation,” he stated.
