Southern Command has commenced this year’s inter-unit drill competition in Accra.
During the competition, the various units under the command would battle for supremacy on the square and also imbibe the spirit of comradeship into the officers and men.
Units under Southern Command are 1st Battalion of Infantry, 2nd Battalion of Infantry, 5th Battalion of Infantry, 64 Infantry Regiment, Armoured Recce Regiment, 66 Artillery Regiment, 48 Engineer Regiment and Southern Command Camp.
Speaking at the ceremony at the Abugah Square at the Recce Regiment (Burma Camp) in Accra, the General Officer in-charge of the Southern Command, Brigadier General Thomas Oppong–Peprah, said the increase in operational and administrative commitments have led to few military personnel on the ground.
“But we live by our motor, Kullum Shirri, ever ready! And I salute our gallant officers and men assembled here to demonstrate their ability in executing appropriate words of command in a sharp and uniform manner.”
Highlighting the importance of the competition, Brigadier General Oppong Preprah said the soldier begins his military life on the square where un-military attitudes and characters are broken down and replaced with new forms of behavior.
“Until he or she passes off the square, the cadet or recruit is not considered as a person who can cater adequately for himself.”
Commanding officers of the various units, as well as the Director-General in-charge of Training, Air Commodore I. R Wajo, were present at the event.
