The quadbikes and pickup trucks donated by the Spanish government
THE GOVERNMENT of Spain has donated four pickup trucks, four quad bikes and an undisclosed number of computers to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to aid in their operations in ensuring peace and safety within Ghana and its borders.
At a brief presentation ceremony held on Friday at the premises of the Interior Ministry in Accra, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs from the Kingdom of Spain, Cristina Gallach Figueras, noted that both countries share a common vision on handling illegal migration, which she described as “very comprehensive.”
She said as a country, they care about human rights as well as socio-economic development, and she was accompanied by a delegation of representatives of different ministries from Spain to “show our full support and commitment to the very vast and deep relationship between Spain and Ghana.”
“We will continue to support Ghana with not only material equipment but also with the needed training because when we see our equipment being used and we see the impact it makes, it is a source of confidence and trust as we build a deeper relationship,” she underscored.
Receiving the items on behalf of Ghana, the Minister-designate of the Interior, Ambrose Derry, stated that the Kingdom of Spain has been very supportive to the ministry, saying “they come at the highest level to interact with us, and I think that is a show of true friendship.”
On issues of migration, Mr. Derry intimated that the Kingdom of Spain is “the European country that we look up to”, explaining that, “they are very comprehensive, and alive to human rights and humanitarian laws.”
“We find it really easy to work with them and we think that they are a good example of the partner that this ministry needs in making Ghana a safer place,” he remarked.
