President, Mr. Meghan presenting the Cheque to the Headmaster of the school, Rev Father Pascal Afesi
Some old students of the St. Mary’s Seminary Senior High School (SMASCO) at Lolobi in the Hohoe Municipality have instituted scholarship scheme for the school to improve on academic excellence.
The scholarship will see the best students in Science, General Arts and Business in the West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) receive GH¢1,000 each to pay part of their tertiary education fees.
The scholarship which was instituted by the 1991-year group of the school is also to motivate the students to put up their best in their final examinations.
George Megbenu, President of the St Mary’s Old Boys Association 91-year group, (SMOBA 91) in an interview with DAILY GUIDE explained that the scholarship was the year group’s small way of raising academic excellence and discipline among the students. It also marked 25 years’ anniversary of the group after they left school.
Mr. Megbenu also disclosed that apart from the scholarship package, the 91-year group has over the past years been contributing in diverse ways to the school to make life easier for the students.
They have also instituted a motivational package for teachers who supervise students in the evening during prep hours. This, he noted, is to appreciate the efforts of teachers who spend extra hours after school with students which they could have otherwise spent with their families.
“We have also donated some reading materials towards the school’s participation in the 2017 National Science and Maths Quiz as well as installed ceiling fans in all the classrooms to provide comfort during classes hours. Apart from that we have done so many things just to make sure that the school that moulded us into what we are today continues to produce academically and morally brilliant human resources for mother Ghana.”
The Headmaster of SMASCO, Rev. Father Pascal Afesi who received the cheque on behalf of the school commended the 91-year group for the gesture and urged other year groups to emulate their gesture.
He stressed that the school currently lacks infrastructural facilities as all the ongoing GETFund projects in the school have stalled due to lack of funds. This he noted is causing congestions in the classrooms, dormitories and dining hall.
He has therefore called on government to come to aid of the school.
