Dr. Stephen Amoah
Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, Dr. Stephen Amoah, has expressed confidence that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will emerge victorious in the December 7 elections.
According to him, achievements in economic recovery, roads, education, health, digitalisation, and what he described as the ‘poised Ashanti Region’ guarantee a win for Dr. Bawumia.
He said this in an article to the DAILY GUIDE as published below:
It is now crystal clear and settled that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will definitely win the December 7 presidential election in Ghana.
The journey had been very tedious for the NPP government just like most governments in the world since the emergence of the global crisis as a result of the COVID-19 and the Russian –Ukraine war.
Yes, the economy of the world including Ghana was hit by one of the most severe economic crises. I am not trying to drive one’s memory back to the doom days, when the world’s economy grew negative 3.3% and Ghana’s economy grew 0.4%.
Global inflation soared to an exclusively high level of about 54.1%. When Ghanaian public workers were asked to stay home but were being paid.
When the private sector sacked about 40,000 workers and we had revenue shortfalls of about GH¢12 billion, leading to over reliance uncontrollably on debt financing and high debt to GDP.
Thanks be to God, the prudent management of Nana Akufo-Addo-Bawumia’s government has enabled the economy to recover tremendously. We are now growing over 5% and inflation dropped to about 20%, with the exchange rate seeing a remarkable stability.
Almost all the primary macro indicators including our primary balance and debt to GDP are performing their benchmarks even now. At present, I do not think any objective financial economist will doubt the fact that the economy of Ghana has been recovering very fast.
In fact, Ghana has outperformed most of the indicative targets set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and thereby getting all the World Bank’s approvals. Well-meaning Ghanaians have begun to realise that, and that has changed their minds to vote for Dr. Bawumia.
The ‘yen huhwee syndrome’ (we have not seen anything) has been countered by massive infrastructural achievements in roads, health, education, digitalisation, and other sectors. These have been illustrated visibly by the recent commissioning of projects in these sectors by President Akufo-Addo in most of the regions.
The panacea to NPP victories, ‘the Ashanti Region’ is now poised as never before to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia after his tour and President Akufo-Addo’s visit, coupled with the massive projects he commissioned in the region.
‘Hwewa se tena mu na to aba pa’ has rather caught up with the dwellers of the region in favour of the NPP. Their kids can now access education from primary school to the senior high school (SHS).
Dr. Bawumia also promises free university for the children of cocoa farmers and the disabled. The resultant effects of the digitalisation and its transformative impact, easy access to driving licence, passport, birth certificate and others have been well received and understood by the people. The fear of National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s not offering any better alternative and what they did to Ghanaians in the previous regimes are being recollected now.
What has been their greatest oath is the four-year power outages in Ghana during the NDC’s last regime, destroying industries and growing our economy as low as about 3.2%, far lower than even now.
The Ashanti Region gave the NPP vote difference of about 1 million between the two leading parties in both 2016 and 2020 elections, propelling the NPP to victories. I bet you, if what we are experiencing now is anything to go by, the difference will be more than 1.2 million, and that will be a victory for Dr. Bawumia without any dispute.
The NDC patrons in the region realising that now, have decided to threaten voters with violence and rumour mongering just to reduce voter turnout. I am accordingly admonishing the security agencies in the region and the country to be proactive to prevent any such antisocial behaviours.
The Ashanti Region is in high spirits and cannot wait to vote. This was not the case in June, 2024. We should not forget, however, that due to its cosmopolitan nature the NDC gets hundreds of thousands of votes, but they are not always adequate to make an impact in the region.
The digitalisation revolution, the unprecedented infrastructural developments in education, health and roads, the pro-poor policies both in kind and cash: Â National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Free and Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE), school feeding, Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) and the Free Senior High School (SHS) plus the intelligence and humility nature of Dr. Bawumia have made it possible for the NPP to retain power. A situation we did not experience six months ago.
The collective efforts of leaders, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, President Nana Akufo-Addo, the First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, and the party’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have reignited hope and encouraged voter participation of those who had earlier decided not to vote.
There are countless reasons and substantial evidence to confirm that Dr. Bawumia will comfortably win this election. NPP activists need to work hard to consolidate the present situation to the end.
Now, most Ghanaians have decided to vote for Bawumia.
