The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), Anthony Kobina Kurentsir Sam, has announced that the Assembly would construct modern markets that will boost the local economy.
He indicated that the move would also help businesses to thrive.
He noted that the Sekondi Market needs to be renovated and expanded to meet the growing population in the area.
Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Mr K.K Sam pointed out that the Takoradi Market would also be given a facelift.
“However, before any work can take place, we need to have satellite markets before we can pull down the markets within the metropolis for construction works to start.
“We have investors who have expressed interest and we are waiting for their drawings and the necessary procedures for work to start,” he added.
He revealed that so far a total amount of GHC72,567.10 had been spent by the assembly in the decongestion exercise it embarked on in December 2017.
According to the Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor, the amount covers allowances for security personnel, who supervised the exercise, fuel for vehicles and feeding, among others.
He was happy that there were no skirmishes between residents and officials who were tasked to undertake the exercise in the metropolis.
He was grateful the residents complied with the various directives during the exercise.
“No incident of brutality or maltreatment by the taskforce has been reported to me. We sincerely appreciate the support and cooperation exhibited.”
“We will continue to count on the support and cooperation of everybody in the metropolis to sustain this exercise in order to save money for such exercise”
- K Sam added that debris from the demolished structures were being cleared to allow the planting of ornamental plants and the construction of pavements of the sidewalks.
He indicated that the assembly was engaging owners of temporary structures along the principal streets of Takoradi, who had not been affected by the demolition exercise to either relocate or re-position them.
“Owners of dilapidated and abandoned structures are being advised to remove or re-position them in line with the Assembly’s standard.”
“At the appropriate time, the Assembly will move to demolish all such structures should the owners fail to comply with our directives,” he said.
He also ordered owners of all lawful temporal structures to repaint their property with the corresponding primary colours of the various sub-metros.
“Green for Sekondi, Blue for Takoradi, Yellow and wine for Essikado-Ketan and Effia-Kwesimintsim respectively.”
