Suspected ‘Wee’ Smuggler Arrested

The suspect

A young man was apprehended on April 5, 2025, at the VIP station in Accra, on suspicion of illicit drug smuggling.

The incident occurred around midday when the suspect brought a parcel to be delivered to Kumasi.

According to Yaw Amponsah Marfo, Managing Director of the bus station, the suspect’s parcel was searched after staff suspected it contained illicit substances. The search revealed substances believed to be cannabis.

Mr. Marfo explained that he had issued a directive earlier that day for all parcels to be thoroughly searched or taken to the parcel office for valuation. This decision was made after numerous buses were seized due to suspicion of carrying illicit drugs.

“We’ve had instances where buses were impounded, and illicit drugs were found. So, I gave the directive to thoroughly search all parcels,” Mr. Marfo explained. “The young man in question was brought to me this noon after he was searched and found to have material suspected to be drugs, even though he claimed they were clothes.”

While being taken away by the police, the suspect claimed he had been sent on an errand and was told the parcel contained clothes for kids. “The person who sent me told me it was kids’ stuff, so I didn’t go through,” he said.

The police have taken the suspect into custody for further investigation.
