The ongoing nationwide debt collection exercise by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Western Region has revealed that the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) owes the power distribution company an amount of GH¢1.3 million.
The university has subsequently been disconnected from the national grid for allegedly failing to pay the debt.
The Western Regional Public Relations Officer of ECG, Benjamin Quarcoo noted that his outfit thought that authorities of the university would have ensured that their debt was settled immediately the nationwide exercise began, but TTU allegedly refused to do so.
“We were expecting institutions such as TTU and other individuals to make payment when the nationwide debt collection exercise started. Some have complied and made part payments but others have decided not to pay their debt.
“So this morning we came to TTU and realised the institution is owing ECG GH¢1.3 million, so we had no other option than to disconnect their electricity.
“So as we speak, the university is disconnected from the national grid. If the authorities should pay us, we will reconnect them,” he indicated.
