The exploded tanker
Samuel Kainya, a 16-year-old welder apprentice in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, reportedly died last Saturday while plying his trade.
The apprentice met his untimely death when he was said to be mending a broken part of a fuel tanker with a welding machine.
According to sources, as Kainya was welding the tanker, it exploded, killing him instantly and injuring three others.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that one of the injured persons also lost his life Sunday afternoon.
Chief Supt Richard Appiah, Western Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE.
He indicated that one Eklu Agbormegah, 47-year-old driver of the tanker, with registration number GN 6228-14 and resident of Zenu-Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, went to the police last Saturday to report the case.
According to the driver, at about 10:30 am Saturday, he went to a welding shop at Baku near Atuabo in the district, to repair a broken part of the vehicle.
He claimed that in the course of the welding, the tanker exploded, killing Samuel Kenyah instantly and injuring three other persons.
Chief Supt Appiah gave the names of the injured persons as Michael Boavo, 26; Jackson Bosompem, 23 – both welders – and Amos Tetteh, 36 (the driver’s mate).
The injured were rushed to the Eikwei Hospital and were responding to treatment while the body of the deceased was deposited at the Axim Government Hospital awaiting autopsy.
Chief Supt Appiah disclosed that Amos Tetteh, who was among the three injured persons receiving treatment at the hospital, passed on at about12 noon yesterday.
He said that the body had been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital for autopsy.
The regional MTTD boss indicated that the driver of the tanker was in police custody assisting in investigation.
