Tema Central MP Organises Health Fair

Kofi Brako, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema Central Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, has organised a free health screening fair for his constituents.

Over 900 people, including the aged and weak, accessed the free health exercise, where medical professionals from the Tema General Hospital and New Crystal Healthcare were there to offer their support.

They were screened of various health problems, including breast cancer, hypertension, diabetes, cholesterol, ear, nose and throat (ENT), malaria, hypertension, hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, eye testing, among others.

This is the second of such medical exercise organised by Kofi Brako for his constituents, with the initial health screening taking place somewhere in 2013, where about 20 medical teams from the United States of America (USA) were brought in to examine the people.

Kofi Brako, speaking with the media during the health screening fair in Tema, promised to build community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compounds in parts of the constituency to help meet the immediate health needs of the aged.

He stated that the CHPS compounds were needed as an intervention to control ailments, especially when health service has become expensive.

According to him, the health facility would be sited at populated areas and would have a trained nurse solely attached to it whose additional responsibility would be to visit patients’ homes to provide them with health service packages.

The facility would additionally have a volunteer and a committee set up to help reach homes to educate residents on the need to live a healthy life. He said, “When I was campaigning during the 2012 elections I promised the people that I will implement programmes and interventions which will improve their health so since I became the MP, I have done a lot to improve on the living conditions and making sure that my people are healthy.

“I have constructed an ante-natal centre at the Tema General Hospital to cater for the nursing mothers who are there for treatment. I have constructed toilet facilities for some public schools, I have constructed a football pitch in the community and I am now working on the Valco Park. I have also sponsored some senior high school students,” Kofi Brako added.

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has targeted constructing several CHPS compounds in all the three constituencies in Tema, namely Tema East, Central and West, in order to get healthcare closer to the people, particularly in densely populated areas.
