IN AN EFFORT to make crime unattractive, the Tema Regional Police Command has purchased and launched the use of Phantom 3 Drones –   a maiden technology that will be used to fight crime in the region.

The device, which is used to detect and combat crime at flash point areas, will be operated on a pilot basis at Community One business district, Ashaiman Municipality, Industrial Area and on the Accra-Tema Motorway.

In future, it will be made available in areas such as Ada, Afienya, Zenu and other districts.

Speaking to the media at the launch in Tema, the Tema Regional Police Commander, Nana Asomah Hinneh, explained that the drones can last for a period of time in the skies and also travel as far as 5, 000 meters.

“I personally acquired the high-technology drones more than GH? 7, 000 as a result of some of the bad things that have happened in the region. I am optimistic the drones will make criminal activities unattractive in the region,” the commander stated.

He pointed out that the drones would not expose or invade people’s privacy because they would be controlled by trained personnel and monitored to detect criminal activities in the region.

He stressed that the drones can last at least for 30 minutes in the skies and would be monitored by a standby team. “Police will continue to adopt the use of advanced technology in fighting crime as time changes,” he added.
