The Teqball Federation Ghana (TFG) has inaugurated its Ashanti regional branch at Asante Akyem Agogo.
The recently inaugurated branch is the second after the Greater Accra regional branch was set up.
The move satisfies calls by active players of the sport to get regional representatives in place to promote and develop the game across the country.
The President of TFG, Kofi Poku Osei, chronicled how the federation started as a fun game and has developed as a professional sport.
He said the sport offers athletes the opportunity to represent Ghana at international championships.
Poku Osei also noted that teqball is gradually being recognized as an Olympic sport; hence, the need to inaugurate regional branches.
The Board Chairman for the National Sports Authority (NSA) and an aspiring NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asante Akyem North Constituency, Kwadwo Baah-Agyemang, said teqball has come to enhance the less privileged economically and assist them in gaining employment through sports.
He added that the inauguration of the federation is an important step towards sport development in the region.
An eight-member executive board comprising Dennis Kwabena Appiah (chairman), Bernard Amaning (vice), Godwin Kwao (secretary) and Peprah Boabeng has been instituted to begin operation in the region.
The rest are Prince Kwaku Baah (organiser), Francisca Owusu Boatemaa (deputy organiser), Alhassan Yakubu (treasurer) and Christiana Asantewaa (deputy).
Teqball was invented in 2014 in Hungary by two football enthusiasts—Gábor Borsányi, a former professional player, and Viktor Huszár, a computer scientist.
It is a sport played between two players as a singles game or between three or four players as a doubles game, which resembles table tennis.
Teqball is played on a curved table and with a ball similar to a football hit by any part of the body except the hands.
The game is represented at the international level by the Fédération Internationale de Teqball (FITEQ).
A number of world-class footballers like Brazilians Ronaldinho, Neymar and Douglas Costa have been attracted by the game, and the sport is now aiming at Olympic inclusion.
