Tight Security At NPP Conference In Kumasi

There is heavy presence of security personnel at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital where the ruling New Patriotic Party is hosting its National Delegates’ Conference today.

The security men mostly centered at the gates leading to the Heroes park are checking the accreditation of the delegates and also ensure maximum security of delegates.

The delegates including governments officials are being screened by the security men to show proof of their Covid-19 vaccination before being allowed entry to the conference grounds.
The party has also mounted some surveillance cameras at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus where some of the delegates have been lodged.

The delegates, among government officials who are attending the event, are only seen wearing shirts in party colors.

The entire ambience of the stadium has also been decorated with big banners with the photos of President Akufo-Addo and the inscriptions of the government policies being implemented bodily written on them.

This year’s conference is under the theme “Our resolve, our determination, and commitment to Ghana’s development” as over 6,000 delegates are expected to converge on the Heroes Park to partake in the event.

Among the other activities of the conference, the delegates will discuss several issues aimed at helping the NPP win the 2024 general elections.

So far proposals for a possible amendment to the party’s constitution have been submitted and are expected to be discussed at the conference.

Key among the proposals is to elect a presidential candidate two clear years before a major election.

Currently, the party elects a candidate two years before elections if the party is in opposition and a year when the party is in power.

Party members believe the current arrangement makes it difficult for a new candidate to mend bridges and heal the wounds of other aspirants before the election.
