Prominent Nigerian actress, Toyin Abraham, has vowed to never again reveal her political inclinations following a wave of backlash on social media for her support of Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections.
Toyin Abraham, who was outspoken in her endorsement of the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate, faced renewed criticism on Tuesday when an X user questioned whether she would eventually share President Tinubu’s plans with the public.
“Maybe one day Toyin Abraham will divulge the plans Bola Tinubu shared with her to the public. I strongly believe we deserve to hear. Thank you @toyin_abraham1,” the user wrote.
In her response, Abraham explained, “Of course, I was told and promised good governance and happiness for everyone and I believed. If things didn’t go well, why do I have to be the one to suffer for it? Because I remember I voted for Jonathan and I was bullied but I didn’t blame anyone after everyone chose Buhari. So please, why would they be cursing and trolling me every time?”
The actress further elaborated on her stance, stating that she has learned her lesson about being open with her political choices. “I have faced my life and career because I am not a politician and I’m not in government. I have learnt my lesson never to be open with my choice again,” she wrote.
Abraham’s commitment to Tinubu was not only vocal but also written, as she reaffirmed her support in an open letter following his inauguration. Her loyalty was reciprocated by Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, who assured her of his loyalty just as she had shown to his father.
Despite this support, Toyin Abraham has decided to retreat from sharing her political views publicly, aiming to avoid the backlash and trolling that have come her way.
